SACRIFICIO (SACRIFICE)

En ajedrez existe una jugada llamada sacrificio que consiste en otorgar una aparente ventaja al contrario regalándole una pieza. En realidad, como resulta sencillo imaginar, el regalo no es tal, ya que el jugador siempre espera obtener a cambio un beneficio táctico; bien porque termina ocupando posiciones de interés en el tablero o bien porque espera capturar alguna pieza del contrincante. Pero existe una excepción y es el conocido como sacrificio suicida. En esta jugada lo único que se persigue al entregar una o varias piezas es mermar tanto las fuerzas que el único final posible a la partida son las tablas. Cuando el pasado viernes, Francisco, entrenador del Almería, quitó a Wellington Silva, la afición silbó el sacrificio. El brasileño parecía el único jugador del equipo capaz de aportar luz en un partido gris. Jugaba el papel de líder que Fede Catarbia desempeñaba en el Córdoba. Pero mientras el Chapi Ferrer mantuvo en el campo al argentino, e incluso lo arropó con los cambios, Francisco decidió retirar a Wellington. Entonces sólo quedó esperar que el sacrificio concediera la ventaja que el entrenador almeriense dibujó en su cabeza. Pero ésta no llegó, de manera que la jugada se convirtió, finalmente, en un sacrificio suicida y el partido acabó en empate. Supongo que no fue ésa la intención de Francisco y que, simplemente, el lance no salió como imaginó. Los cambios son una suerte de remiendo que el fútbol otorga a los entrenadores para corregir sus errores. Pero Francisco, esta vez, no supo hacerlo.

Y en mitad de excesiva nada, una ilusión. La de Gaspar. El chaval debutó en primera división con dieciséis años. Para él fue un sueño, aunque en los diez desordenados minutos del final del partido poco pudo aportar. Es cierto que buscó el balón y que mostró desparpajo, aunque no tuvo ocasión de mucho más. Quizá tengamos oportunidad de volverlo a ver. En cuestión de un mes llega la segunda jornada de la fase de clasificación de la Copa de África y la plantilla puede volver a parecer corta otra ve z.

In chess, there is a move named “sacrifice” that consists in providing the opponent with an apparent advantage by giving him/her a piece. However, as it is easy to imagine, this is not so as the player always hopes to obtain a tactical benefit in exchange, either occupying positions of interest on the chessboard or trusting to capture an opponent’s piece. But there is an exception and it is known as the “suicide sacrifice.” During this move, the only goal when giving the opponent one or several pieces is undermining forces so much that the only possible ending for the game is a draw. Last Friday, Francisco, Almeria’s coach, brought on another player as a substitute for Wellington Silva and the fans whistled the sacrifice. The Brazilian player seemed to be the only one who would be able to shed light on a grey game. He was playing the role of leader in the same way as Fede Catarbia in Cordoba’s team. But, whereas Chapi Ferrer kept the Argentinean on the field and even supported him by means of the substitutions, Francisco decided to do the opposite with Wellington. Since then, it only remained to hope that the sacrifice gave the advantage that Almeria’s coach imagined in his head. But this did not take place and, in this way, the move finally became a suicide sacrifice and the game ended in a draw. I suppose that this was not Francisco’s intention and, simply, the move did not result as he imagined. Substitutions are a type of patch that football gives coaches to correct their mistakes. But this time, Francisco did not know how to do it.

 

And, in the middle of excssive void, there was an illusion: Gaspar´s one. The sixteen-year-olg guy made his debut in the first división. For him, it was a dream although he could provide verty Little during the ten messy minutes at the end of the game. It is true that he looked for the ball and showed self-confidence although he had no time to do more. Perhaps, we will have the opportunity to see him again. The second match-day of the qualifier for the Africa Cup of Nations is coming within one month and the squad could seem small again.
