ETERNO RETORNO (ETERNAL RETURN)

"Madame Bovary soy yo", solía responder Flaubert al ser preguntado por la identidad de la protagonista de su novela más notable. En la obra, referencia del realismo literario, se narra la vida de una joven que mira el mundo desde la óptica que le otorgan las numerosas lecturas de  novelas románticas. Pero no traigo a esta columna la obra del genio francés por su romanticismo sino por otro concepto que introdujo en su novela y que en filosofía se conoce como eterno retorno. Éste consiste, de manera resumida, en la repetición de un acontecimiento normalmente tras una catarsis. Y en esto es en lo que pensé cuando vi que Francisco alineaba en el partido que enfrentaba al Almería con la Real Sociedad a tres centrocampistas de corte defensivo: Thomas, Verza y Azeez. En futbol, a la coincidencia de tres jugadores de estas características en el terreno de juego se le conoce como trivote, y normalmente suele ser un recurso que los entrenadores utilizan cuando sienten que parten en desventaja frente al centro del campo del equipo contrario.

Y es precisamente ese reconocimiento de su propia debilidad el que hace que la estrategia se utilice a hurtadillas. Un absurdo pudor impide reconocer a los entrenadores que se sienten cómodos arropando a sus centrocampistas menos hábiles con jugadores de corte similar, haciéndoles ganar fuerza en la unión. Pero, en no pocas ocasiones, el resultado es positivo. Un ejemplo volvimos a vivirlo el pasado domingo en horario matinal (ése que los equipos grandes defendieron para ganar el mercado de oriente y que termina ocupado por partidos de los equipos pequeños). Y lo más curioso es que no fue la primera vez que al Almería le funcionó. Eterno retorno.  El año pasado, en el tramo final de la liga, cuando todos los pronósticos desahuciaban al equipo, el trivote se convirtió en tabla de salvación (cambiando a Thomas por Vélez). Habrá que ver, a partir de ahora, la conclusión que el entrenador extrae de todo esto. La mía la reservo para ocasiones mayores.

Flaubert used to answer "Madame Bovary is me", when he was asked about the identity of the protagonist of his most notable novel. In this book, a major work in literary realism, it is narrated the life of a young woman who looks at the world from a perspective provided by her numerous readings of romantic novels. But I do not mention the French genius’ work in this column because of its romanticism but another issue that he introduced in his novel, which is known as eternal return in philosophy. In a summarized way, this consists in the repetition of an event, usually after a catharsis. And I thought about this when I saw that Francisco started three defensive midfielders (Thomas, Verza and Azeez) in the match between Almería and Real Sociedad. Concerning football, the coincidence of three players of these characteristics in the playing field is known as “trivote” (a line of three defensive midfielders) and it is usually a tactic that coaches use when they feel that they are at a disadvantage in comparison with the midfield of the opposing team.

And it is precisely this recognition of the own weakness what makes this strategy be used stealthily. Absurd shyness avoids recognising those coaches tha feel comfortable protecting their less skilful midfielders by means of players with similar features, making them gain strength when put together. But, in many ocassions, the result is positive. Again, we witnessed an example last Sunday during the morning Schedule (the one that the big teams defended to win the Asian market and that  matches of small teams take up now). And the most curious aspect, ths was not the first time that this tractic worked for Almería. Eternal return. Last year, at the end of the league, when all the predictions gave up hope for the team, the "trivote" became the lifeline (substituting Thomas by Vélez). From now on, we will see the conclusion that the coach draws from all this. I keep mine for greater occasions.
