DELANTEROS (FORWARDS)

Decía un entrenador británico llamado John Gregory que los delanteros ganan los partidos mientras que son los defensas los que ganan los campeonatos. Y podemos aceptar que la frase tiene su carga de razón si nos fijamos en los equipos grandes, pero no se sostiene –al menos en su segunda parte– si de lo que hablamos es de equipos que luchan por sobrevivir en la competición que sea. Y digo esto porque soñar con ganar un campeonato es una licencia que muy pocos se pueden permitir, pero luchar por ganar un partido al rival que se tiene en frente –independientemente de su presupuesto o de la masa social que soporte– es lo que da sentido y cierto grado de romanticismo a este deporte.

Así que podando la frase para vestir con ella a un equipo humilde como es el Almería, lo que nos queda es que son los delanteros los que ganan los partidos. Por eso es por lo que sobre ellos se posan los focos la mayoría de las veces, por eso las cámaras recogen sus gestos para interpretar sus impresiones, por eso los equipos generan campañas de marketing en torno a su figura y por eso los presidentes aceptan los mayores esfuerzos económicos.

Pero al observar los datos del equipo, después de llevar disputadas ocho jornadas de liga, vemos que algo falla. A estas alturas de la competición, el Almería ha marcado siete goles. Y de esos siete, sólo uno ha sido materializado por su póker de delanteros (Hemed, Thievy, Teerasil y Quique González). Como el quipo pasea relativamente alejado de los puestos de peligro, las sirenas permanecen silenciadas, pero la buena situación actual no debe hacernos perder de vista esta situación. Seguro que Francisco lo tiene muy en cuenta y trabaja con sus atacantes de manera especial, afinando sus miras telescópicas. Porque los goles no sólo son la salsa del juego, sino que son también los que dan oxígeno a los equipos.

And we can accept that the sentence is right to some extent if we focus on the big teams, but it is not sustainable –at least the second part– if we speak about teams that fight to survive in any competition. And I say this because dreaming of winning a championship is a licence that very few ones can afford, but fighting to win a game against the opponent that is opposite –regardless of its budget or the amount of fans it has– is what gives meaning and a certain degree of romanticism to this sport.

So, pruning the sentence to dress a humble team as Almería, what remains is that forwards are the ones who win games. That is why they are paid attention most of the time, that is why cameras record their gestures to interpret their sensations, that is why teams carry out marketing campaigns around their star and that is why presidents make the biggest economic efforts.

But, when observing team statistics after eight days of league, we see that something is not working. At this point of the competition, Almería has scored seven goals. And only one out of these seven goals has been scored by the “poker” of forwards (Hemed, Thievy, Teerasil and Quique González). As the team is relatively far from the dangerous positions, sirens remain silent but the current good situation must not make us lose sight of this situation. It is certain that Francisco is taking this into account and works with his forwards in a special way, training their telescopic views. Because goals are not only the essence of play as they also give oxygen to teams.
